Our team continues archival research and the collection of new materials for the film about the legendary\u00a0Pavlo Virsky Ensemble<\/strong>.
After diving into deep search, we have finally obtained something of great value to our story \u2014 documents that shed light on little-known pages of the Virsky family\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the declassified archives of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), a file was discovered concerning\u00a0Pavlo Virsky\u2019s brother \u2014 Oleksii Pavlovych Virsky<\/strong>, born in 1903 in the village of Shyroke, Kherson Governorate.\n
In the 1930s, he worked in Odesa, heading the Department of Political Education of the Regional Department of Public Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\u00a0August 20, 1937<\/strong>, he was arrested.\n
The charges followed the standard formula of the time \u2014 participation in a counterrevolutionary Trotskyist organization and anti-Soviet agitation.\n
On\u00a0September 28, 1937<\/strong>, the visiting session of the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR sentenced him to\u00a0execution by shooting<\/strong>, and the sentence was carried out the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His wife,\u00a0Taisiia Yefimivna Virska<\/strong>, was arrested as a\u00a0\u201cfamily member of an enemy of the people\u201d\u00a0and sent to labor camps in the Komi ASSR. All family property was confiscated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, Pavlo Virsky was already working in the theatre \u2014 staging productions, teaching, and gaining recognition.\nAfter his brother\u2019s arrest, he came under constant surveillance. For many years he lived with the stigma of being\u00a0\u201ca relative of an enemy of the people.\u201d\nDespite this, he continued his work and later founded the\u00a0National Honored Academic Ensemble of Ukrainian Dance<\/strong>, which became a symbol of Ukrainian culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KGB archival materials confirm that Virsky and his ensemble remained under continuous supervision by the Soviet security services.\nBefore international tours, artists were briefed, and during their trips they were accompanied by KGB officers posing as translators. Reports recorded the smallest details \u2014 conversations, behavior, and contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One episode from\u00a01969<\/strong>\u00a0stands out: during the ensemble\u2019s tour in Spain, Pavlo Virsky was photographed next to\u00a0Otto Skorzeny, a former SS officer. Upon returning to Kyiv, an investigation was launched, but due to the intervention of party leadership, the matter was quietly closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oleksii Virsky was fully rehabilitated in 1957.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These declassified documents reveal the historical context in which the Virsky family lived:\none brother executed in 1937, the other living for decades under surveillance \u2014 yet managing to preserve his art and create a dance legacy that became part of Ukraine\u2019s cultural identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
