The Pavlo Virsky National Honoured Academic Dance Ensemble of Ukraine is a national professional artistic ensemble of Ukraine based in Kyiv and one of the most internationally recognized representatives of Ukrainian choreographic culture.
In 1940, the ensemble was reorganized into the Song and Dance Ensemble of Ukraine, and in 1951 it was re-established as the State Dance Ensemble of Ukraine. From 1955 until 1975, the ensemble was led by its founder, Pavlo Virsky, who served as its principal artistic director and shaped its artistic identity. After his death, the ensemble was headed by Oleksandr Segal (1975–1980). Since 1980, the ensemble has been led by Myroslav Vantukh, People’s Artist of Ukraine and recipient of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize.
У 1940 році ансамбль було реорганізовано в Ансамбль пісні і танцю України, а у 1951 році — у Державний ансамбль танцю України. Від 1955 до 1975 року його організатором і беззмінним художнім керівником був Павло Вірський. Після його смерті ансамбль очолював Олександр Сегаль (1975–1980), а з 1980 року й дотепер художнім керівником і генеральним директором є Мирослав Вантух — народний артист України, лауреат Національної премії України імені Тараса Шевченка.
The ensemble’s repertoire includes traditional and contemporary dances from various regions of Ukraine, as well as large-scale choreographic compositions reflecting historical themes and images of everyday life. Among the most renowned works are Zaporozhians, Chumaks’ Joys, In the Cornfield, New Year’s Snowstorm, Hopak, What the Willow Weeps About, and many others. A defining feature of the ensemble is its creative reinterpretation of folk dance heritage and its integration into a modern stage language.
All dance performances are accompanied by the ensemble’s symphony orchestra. For many years, it was conducted by Pavlo Virsky’s close collaborator, composer and People’s Artist of Ukraine Ihor Ivashchenko. From 1994, the orchestra was led by Honoured Artist of Ukraine Vitalii Redko, and since 2001 it has been conducted by composer and Honoured Artist of Ukraine Oleksandr Cheberko.
The musical arrangements and original compositions for the ensemble’s productions have been created by leading Ukrainian composers, including Heorhii Zavhorodnyi, Yurii Levytskyi, Anatolii Khelemskyi, Yakiv Lapinskyi, Borys Yarovynskyi, and others.
Thanks to its exceptional level of professional excellence, the ensemble has gained wide international recognition. Over the decades, it has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America. The ensemble has performed in more than 60 countries worldwide, representing Ukrainian culture on major international stages and at prestigious cultural events.
Today, the Pavlo Virsky National Dance Ensemble of Ukraine remains a living cultural institution, combining tradition and innovation while preserving and advancing Ukrainian cultural identity in a global context.
